Blogging from flickr

Blogging directly from flickr is terrific, but the CSS code that flickr uses for some of the blog layout options is glitchy. The 100 px photo layouts in particular gave me problems working with WordPress. You may need to customize the CSS code if you want to use these layouts. (go to YOUR ACCOUNT --> EXTENDING FLICKR --> YOUR BLOGS --> EDIT --> LAYOUT to find the box for customizing your flickr layout.)

This is the CSS code I used to fix the 100 px left-aligned layout:

<a href="{photo_url}" title="photo sharing"><img style="border: 1px solid #ddd; padding: 5px; margin: 8px 8px 8px 0" align="left" src="{photo_src_t}" alt="{photo_title}" /></a><br />

More flickr & photo fun ideas

  • Create posters, magazine covers, etc. - Then upload projects to flickr. Great teen project. Handy for creating promotional posters for events.
  • Geotag your photos. Flickr lets you place your photos on a map, providing another way for users to find your photos.
  • MemoryMaps Take a screen shot of detailed aerial map from Google or MSN maps. Upload it to flickr and add notes over the sections of the map that you have memories about. Search flickr for the tag memorymap to see examples.
  • Explore the idea of visual storytelling. View the group “Visual Storytelling: Tell a story in 5 frames”:
  • Color Fields Colr Pickr
  • Do More with flickr ($$) Business cards, photo cubes, photo books, send photos for printing and more.
  • Cindi Trainor (Eastern Kentucky U) did a great animoto video with photos of library staff. Fun to embed on a web page or research guides page to show students/patrons what you all look like.

Image Search

  • CompFight - handy flickr search tool. Simple interface and very fast. Limit to Creative Commons license or not. Safe search or not. Tags or full text.

  • flickr Advanced Search - use advanced search to limit to various Creative Commons licenses. Handy for finding photos for presentations and reports. Use it with the PicLens firefox addon for 'swooping' through results.
